DYKES TO THE RESCUE

My brother sent me this little gem from Sarah “you betcha” Palin speaking on Faux News.
Apparently all we need to stop the oil leak are Dutch dykes and damns.
Hey Bill, please have her on your show more often. This kind of wisdom is priceless.

RIOT DOG

This dog is an official Miscreant! His real name is Kanellos and, according to published accounts, he’s acquired quite a taste for civil unrest, having made an appearance at virtually every major Greek protest and riot over the last two years. This is the raddest dog ever!!!!

MAD MICKEY VS. PAC-MAN

To serve and abuse

Here in Los Angeles we have to deal with many annoying things living here. One thing of those things is the LAPD. They wonder why most of LA treats them with contempt. This is why.

Mad Mickey Update

Here are some updated shots of the Mad Mickey x Manny Pacquiao project being done by MINDstyle Toys.  The first release is This July in the Philippines.  The U.S. release will feature the original khaki shorts.

POUND FOR POUND

Back when I was working fulltime at Disney I came up with this “Mad Mickey” for a project I worked on. The toy team at Disney and Mindstyle Toys teamed up with Manny Pacquiao with this pretty awesome vinyl toy collaboration. It should be dropping some time this summer.
Here is the original illustration and the early sculpts of both the Mickey and the Manny vinyls.

THE WORLD FAMOUS…..

So I just got news that The Seventh Letter
released a t-shirt design that I did for them. Not only that, but they also used the type setting I did for the back hits on most of this season’s line up. I’m pretty stoked about this, one of the reasons is because The Seventh Letter has some of the best artists on the planet on their roster. I hope to get more out for them in the future as well as contributing to the almighty UVT.

UP THE RIVER

I headed out to Pasadena to check out the Ulysses Guide To The L.A. River art show opening.  The show was put together to debut the book by the same title.  It’s an awesome book chronicaling the everyday findings in the L.A. River from art to zoology.  The art show was equally awesome as they turned the gallery into the bed of the river.

I forgot my camera so I these are all with my iPhone. Hence the awesome quality.

ILL SWILL

Went out to Crewest tonight to hang with my friends Christina and Chaz. He and Man One designed some wine bottle labels and they were unveiled tonight at a small gathering. Some of the illest labels I’ve seen and if you are a fan of either of these two artists, you better hurry because these bottles are going fast.

After a couple days in Tokyo, we took the bullet train to Kyoto. It’s totally different from Tokyo. You see more women walking around in kimono’s and it was also one of the only major cities not bombed by the allies during the war.

JAPAN IS FUCKIN AWESOME! pt.01

I had the opportunity to go to Japan a little while ago for work.  It was one of the most amazing places I’ve ever been to.  I can’t wait to go back.  The sites and the people are amazing.  Not that I’m the most world travelled, but form the places I’ve been to, Japan ranks at the top.

Berlin PT.2 Sachsenhausen

During my trip to Berlin, being the history buff that I am, I had to take a trip out to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. It’s about an hour train ride outside of Berlin, in Oranienburg. So put there to keep the camp out of the view of the German population. During the time of it’s operation, mostly political prisoners and Germans who opposed Nazi ideology were kept there…for a while. Later, all groups deemed unfavorable would be kept here. The Soviets were so impressed by the camp that they used it for another 5 years.

Here is another piece worth watching.  This time mixing the sounds of Black Sabbath to the visuals of Fantasia’s NIght on Bald Mountain sequence.  Another piece of animation genius.

PINK ELEPHANTS X SUN-RA

pinkelephants

You may or not remember this classic piece of animation.  It’s from Disney’s Dumbo,  released in 1940.   Since working at Disney this has been one of my favorite scenes in all the Disney archive.  It’s a testament to the creative genius of  the Disney animators and their ability to tell a story. Add a dash of Sun-Ra and you get an amazing 4 minutes.  Enjoy.

The Garden

Those of you who live in Los Angeles may remember a little 14 acre garden at the edge of the area formerly known as ‘South Central Los Angeles’. This is what it looked like from 1992 till about the end 2007.
SouthCentralFarm
Before the creation of the garden, the land belonged to nine different owners, the largest of which was Alameda-Barbara Investment Company, a real-estate firm which purchased its share in 1980. The company held 80% of the property that would become the present urban garden.[2] The city of Los Angeles acquired the land, by eminent domain, in 1986 for the purpose of building a waste-to-energy incinerator known as the Los Angeles City Energy Recovery Project (LANCER). This idea was abandoned because of community opposition, led by Juanita Tate and Concerned Citizens of South-Central Los Angeles. The city paid $4,786,372 for the property.[3]

The final order of condemnation under eminent domain included a right to repurchase the land should the city sell it for non-public or non-housing purposes within ten years of the condemnation for the largest land owner, Alameda-Barbara Investment Company. The City sold the property to the L.A. Harbor Department in 1994.

In July 1994 the Harbor Department granted a revocable permit to the L.A. Regional Food Bank – a private, nonprofit food-distribution network housed across the street from the Lancer incinerator site – to occupy and use the site as a community garden.

In 2001, Ralph Horowitz, a partner in former property owner Alameda-Barbara sued the City for breach of contract, for failure to honor the original right of repurchase. The City denied his claim.[4]

In 2003, the City of L.A. settled with Horowitz, in a closed door session.[4] The sale was for $5,050,000,[5] slightly above the $4.8 million the city paid for it in the eminent domain seizure. The settlement was done to comply with the repurchase clause as the court had mandated. Horowitz agreed to donate 2.6 acres (11,000 m2) of the site, valued at nearly $3,000,000, for a public soccer field, as part of the settlement. The City Council discussed and approved the terms of the settlement in closed session. The South Central Farm’s Lawyer, Patrick Dunlevy, claims that despite repeated requests, negotiation documents relating to the session, have never been released.[4]

Shortly thereafter the Los Angeles regional Foodbank abandoned the project. In response the farmers formed an organization calling themselves the ‘South Central Farmers Feeding Families’.

On January 8, 2004, Horowitz issued a notice to the gardeners setting February 29, 2004, as the termination date for the community garden. In response members of the South Central Farmers Feeding Families obtained legal counsel (Hadsell & Stormer, Inc., and Kaye, Mclane & Bednarski LLP) and filed a lawsuit seeking to invalidate the sale of the property. The Los Angeles County Superior Court issued a temporary restraining order and later a preliminary injunction halting development of the property until the lawsuit could be settled. The farmers lost the lawsuit and the court raised the injunction, freeing Horowitz to evict the farmers.

Initially, Horowitz sought $16.3 million for the property, more than three times the 1986 eminent domain valuation. In a deal brokered in cooperation by The Trust for Public Land, the SCF have successfully raised a little over six million dollars. Fundraising efforts continued as farmers and celebrities began both a tree sitting campaign and occupation of the land, while under the threat of forced eviction by the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department.[6]

On June 7, 2006, the Annenberg Foundation announced that they would donate the money to buy the farm. Horowitz, however, did not respond to the offer, since it came after his May 22 deadline.[7]

At 3 a.m. on the morning of June 13, 2006, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department arrived at the farm, fully surrounding it by 4 a.m. At 5 a.m., the sheriffs entered the farm, giving the occupants 15 minutes to evacuate. At that point, most of the occupants of the land left, with a few verbal skirmishes reported.[8] According to the Los Angeles Times, more than 40 protesters were arrested. Actress Daryl Hannah was removed from the walnut tree in which she and another tree-sitter had been protesting the eviction and was arrested.

As of June 14, 2006, the farm is being protected by a private security company hired by Horowitz to prevent members of the South Central Farm returning to squat on the land. Horowitz has told the Los Angeles Times and KFI that he would not sell the land to them even if they offered him $100 million, due to the picketing of his house and anti-Semitic remarks directed towards him[9]

On July 5, 2006, workers began bulldozing the farm amidst protest and acts of civil disobedience. One protester chained himself to a bulldozer and another lay down in front of a bulldozer. Both were arrested. Two others were also arrested, one for throwing a milk crate at a police officer and the other for assaulting a bulldozer driver.[10] Ten people were arrested in total.

On July 12, 2006, Judge Helen I. Bendix heard pre-trial arguments in a class-action suit filed by the farmers that the sale of the land to Horowitz “should be nullified on grounds that there was no prior public notice” of the transaction. The farmers’ arguments were rejected on July 27, 2006 when Judge Bendix upheld the sale of the land to Horowitz. Dan Stormer, attorney for the plaintiffs has said he will appeal.[11][12]

As of September 2008, Horowitz and Forever 21 are working on a proposal for a warehouse and distribution center on the now-bulldozed site.[13] If you have a chance, let Council woman Jan Perry know what a sellout she is. And if he’s not humping any reporters, let the mayor know too.

JAVOL-Berlin pt.1

Got a chance to visit the Fatherland recently. All I have to say is Berlin is awesome! Just walking through the streets of Berlin imagining what went down here is humbling. I love history, so to see the places I’ve only seen in books and on the History Channel was a dream come true.
Here’s a little of what I saw. Stay tuned for more.

McGangBangin’

Ok, so my homie let me in on a culinary secret available at your local McDonald’s. It’s Called the McGangBang. It’s bascially a ghetto big mac of sorts…but with chicken. So hat the F is it, you ask? Simple, it’s a double cheeseburger with a McChicken sandwich stuck right in the middle. After seeing some videos on youtube of people ordering this, I had to try one myself.
Verdict-it’s weird. If you’re feeling adventurous, try one.
